Business cards for Sri Lanka

Sixteen to choose from, built from your own badge — the Sri Lanka logo, the wave stripes and the shaka hand are all lifted straight off it. Nothing has been redrawn.

Start with the first five. They are the same card five times over and the only difference is which version of your logo is on the front, so it is the quickest way to settle the thing everything else depends on. Tap Shortlist on anything you like as you go — the list stays at the bottom of the page and you can copy it out at the end.

The QR code is not finished yet. It shows as a dashed box on every card here. When it is done it will be a real code that opens a WhatsApp message straight to you — and because it is a tracked link, you will be able to see how many enquiries came from the printed cards rather than from the website. The box is already the exact size the code will be, so nothing on these cards will move.

The size is not fixed yet either. These are drawn at 90 × 50 mm, which is the usual size in a lot of the world, but the printer in Ahangama may cut something slightly different as standard. Once you have asked them, every card here is re-made at their size in one step — so please pick on the look, not the proportions.

First: which logo goes on the front

These five are the same card five times. Same background, same wording, same back, same type — the only thing that changes is which version of your logo is on the front. Everything after this section assumes that question is settled, so it is worth doing first.

Your Sri Lanka badge exactly as it is, printed large enough that the speckled letters still read as speckled. Nothing about the logo has been changed or redrawn.

The same badge without its teal square behind it. Cheaper to print, and it is the version that can go on a photo, a stamp or a sticker later without being redrawn.

The short, wide version of your logo: the K with the shaka hand, then the name. Because it is wide it pushes the writing underneath rather than beside it, so the whole card is laid out differently.

Your web address as the logo, with the shaka-hand K inside it. On a card handed to someone on a beach that may be the more useful thing to lead with — they are going to look you up rather than memorise the name.

Worth knowing. The letters here are a typeface, not your badge's own lettering — your badge has no O and no full stop, so ".com" cannot be built from it.

Just the shaka hand, big, with your name set beside it. The boldest of the five and the one that would work as a sticker on a board or a van without any changes.

Second: what colour the card is

The first card held exactly as it is, on three other backgrounds. Look at the teal one closely — the teal square behind your badge disappears into the background, which is either the nicest the logo looks or a step too far.

The same card on a warm sand colour instead of white — the same tone that is already inside your badge. Usually printed on coloured card rather than with ink, so it often costs no more than white.

Worth knowing. Usually printed on coloured card rather than with ink, so it often costs no more than plain white.

On your teal. Worth looking at closely: the badge's teal square vanishes into the background, so the letters and the wave appear to sit straight on the card. It is the boldest of the three backgrounds.

On the dark brown your website already uses for its top and bottom bars. The most expensive of the three to print — a solid dark colour shows every imperfection, so it needs a good stock.

Worth knowing. A solid dark card costs more to print and shows every mark, so it needs a better stock than the others.

Third: how the back is laid out

The front stays as it is. The back has to fit your name, two ways of contacting you and the code, without looking like a form. Three ways of doing that.

The code as the back

The back uses the same brown bar your website has across the top, with your name in it. It makes the card look like the same business rather than something made separately.

A teal strip down one side with the code sitting on a white square inside it, so the eye goes straight to it. The code has to be on white to scan reliably, which is what makes the strip worth having.

Worth knowing. A colour that runs to the edge has to be printed slightly oversized and trimmed. Any printer can do it, but it is worth checking they allow for it.

Using the wave, not just the badge

Two cards that use pieces taken out of your badge — the wave stripes and a single crest shape — rather than only the badge itself. The same pieces are being proposed for the new website, so choosing one here would tie the two together.

A single wave-crest shape filling one corner, and nothing else. The same shape turns up on the new website design, so choosing it here would tie the two together.

Your own photograph on the front

Your own photograph of you, bottom-turning in Sri Lanka, on the front of the card. Nine versions: the same picture every time, with a different version of your logo and a different place for it to sit. The picture decides a lot of this — you are in the left third of it, so nothing can be put on top of you, and that is why there is no version with the logo in the middle. Three of the nine put the logo beside the picture rather than on it, in a band or a panel, and those are the easiest of the nine to print.

Your own photograph of you, bottom-turning in Sri Lanka, with the badge in white over it. It is the only picture we hold of you at print quality, and it says what you do and where you do it in a way no amount of writing can. The writing sits on the dark side of the picture so that you stay in the clear on the other. It needs a smoother card than the others to print well.

Worth knowing. A photo needs a smoother card than the rest. On a rough uncoated stock the dark parts of the wave go muddy.

Your badge small in the bottom corner so the photograph gets the whole card. The catch is size: this small, the speckled texture inside the letters fills in and they print solid. The logo still reads — it just loses the grain.

The opposite of the others: your logo in dark brown on the bright spray instead of white on the dark water. The corner of the photo is lifted towards white so the dark logo reads on it, which gives the card a misty, early-morning feel. It is the fussiest of the nine to print.

The photo and the logo side by side rather than one on top of the other: the picture takes half the card and a solid dark panel takes the other half. The cleanest of the nine to print, because nothing is laid over the photograph.

The photograph faded into white

The same photograph handled the other way round: the card is white, the picture sits on part of it and dissolves into the white, and your logo goes in the clear space. These six are the easiest of the whole set to print. Nothing is laid over the photograph and nothing is printed on a dark background, so they hold up on cheaper card where the darker ones would go muddy.

The same idea with less photo and more logo: at this size the speckled texture in your letters prints completely, which is the thing that gets lost when the badge goes small.

The same card the other way round: photo on the left, logo on the white right, and the picture dissolving right across the card rather than stopping partway. Your own frame suits this better — you are on the left of the picture, so nothing has to be re-cropped to keep you in it.

Two that break the pattern

An upright card and one that is not a card at all. Not safe choices, but worth seeing before you settle.

The card stood upright instead of wide. Because your badge is square, this is the layout that lets it be biggest. The catch is that upright cards do not sit in most cardholders or wallet slots.

Worth knowing. Upright cards do not fit standard cardholders or most wallet slots, and some printers charge a setup fee for a non-standard cut.

Not a card design — this is the file a printer needs if you ever want the logo pressed into the card or done in foil. Worth knowing now: the badge loses its speckles when it is foiled, and the hand does not.

What I need back from you

  1. Which logo goes on the front. One of the first five. Everything else follows from it.
  2. Which background, and which back.
  3. The printer's size and card. Whatever the shop in Ahangama cuts as standard, how much extra they need printed around the edge so a background colour reaches it after cutting, and what card they keep in. If one of the photo or dark cards is on your shortlist, ask whether they have a smooth or coated one too.
  4. Two lines of wording to check. The back says ISA L2 Surf Coach — your website spells it out as International Surfing Association L2 Surf Coach and I have shortened it to fit. And the front says Ahangama, Sri Lanka. Both are yours to change.
  5. Kelly's email and phone number, if she wants a card. There is nothing on file for her and I have not made anything up. Her card is the same design with her details on it.
